SANA'A PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Sana'a Public Library is a final year design project in the Masters program, focusing on the integration of modern educational needs within the historic fabric of the city.

Based on the vernacular architectural language of the city, the library is made up of two primary zones; a public library and a research center. Each zone comprises of a set of volumes, with each volume hosting a particular program that relates to the zone it is within.

The building is split into 3 levels, the ground floor level consisting of public areas, level 1 containing semi-public spaces and the upper level maintains more private areas. The vertical layering derives from the traditional spatial diagram of the tower houses within the city, thus creating an extension of that vision within the heart of the building.

Ultimately, the aim of this program focuses on enhancing a dense context through the provision of much needed educational facilities, providing the local inhabitants with spaces that can stitch together a dense yet fragmented part of the city.
